Rollin’ on the World’s Rivers
By Judy Newell
Have river, will travel. River cruising is the hottest segment in cruising and there’s a variety of new ships and new destinations launching this year. You can learn about river cruising at a free seminar on Tuesday, May 15, at 2 pm in the Sala Quetzal in the Biblioteca. It will be presented by Judy Newell of Perfect Journeys, who is a specialist in river cruising.
This is the first in a series of Travel Tuesdays that will explore worldwide travel on a bi-weekly basis.
River cruising opens a new way of seeing a destination as rivers were the original highways of the world. Passengers cruise through the heart of historic towns and villages and dock in the city centers. They can enjoy the sights of the city, leisurely sip wine in a cafe, and then amble back to the ship in the evening.
And river cruising includes lots of things that big lines don’t, such as walking tours in every city, complimentary wine and beer, and biking along river paths. It’s not for the person who wants round-the-clock entertainment – it’s all about being immersed in the destination. And seeing it in a comfortable way, which means unpacking one time, choosing from a variety of gourmet meals and regional wines, and eliminating the hassle of airports, train stations and checking in and out of hotels.
Global itineraries encompass rivers from Europe to China, from Russia to the Pacific Northwest, and from Burma to Egypt to the Amazon. Theme cruises are gaining in popularity such as Christmas market cruises, wine cruises, Civil War History cruises, culinary cruises, Jewish heritage cruises, and tulip season cruises.
