EU bans airport X-ray body scanners due to cancer fear
The European Union has banned X-ray body scanners used by the Transportation Security Administration at U.S. airports because of reports linking them with cancer. The TSA says the amount of radiation from a body scan is equivalent to the amount of radiation passengers receive during two minutes of flying at altitude.
“In order not to risk jeopardizing citizens’ health and safety, only security scanners which do not use X-ray technology are added to the list of authorized methods for passenger screening at EU airports,” according to a statement from the European Commission.
TSA head John Pistole this month initially told a Senate hearing he would agree to an investigation of the machines, but has since retreated from that stance, saying he believes they are safe.
